Men's Stainless Steel Jewellery –
Questions & Answers

Honest answers. No marketing speak.

Material & Quality
316L is a specific stainless steel alloy with an elevated content of chromium, nickel and molybdenum. Molybdenum makes it particularly corrosion-resistant – even when exposed to aggressive liquids like salt water, sweat or chlorine. The "L" stands for "low carbon", which makes it more skin-friendly and stable. This is exactly why 316L is the standard for surgical instruments, implants and medical devices. For jewellery this means: no tarnishing, no discolouration, no skin reaction – even with permanent wear.
Evelence uses 316L throughout – not as a marketing promise, but because it is the more durable material for jewellery that is truly worn every day.
Silver has the reputation of a precious metal – but for everyday jewellery it has clear disadvantages that are rarely discussed openly. 925 sterling silver consists of 7.5% copper, which reacts with air and moisture. The result: silver tarnishes, turns dark and needs regular cleaning. It is also soft – scratches appear quickly, especially on chains and bracelets that rub against the body. Those who wear silver and rarely take it off will find that it loses its look much faster than stainless steel. Silver has its place – for certain delicate designs or when the precious metal status is deliberately desired. For jewellery worn every day without maintenance, stainless steel is the more honest material.
Evelence has deliberately chosen stainless steel – not as a cheap alternative to silver, but because low-maintenance everyday jewellery is what most men actually need.
Real gold (585 / 750) has substance as a store of value – but as everyday jewellery it has weaknesses that are often underestimated. Gold is a soft metal: 14-carat gold has a Mohs hardness of around 3–4, stainless steel sits at 6–7. This means: scratches appear faster, chains bend more easily, clasps wear out. Add to that the price – a simple gold chain in 585 gold starts at several hundred euros, often over €1,000 for solid quality. That is justified when buying gold as an investment or for special occasions. For jewellery worn during sport, showering and daily life, gold is the wrong choice – too soft, too expensive to maintain and too risky for everyday use.
PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) is an industrial vacuum process: metal atoms are vaporised at extreme heat and embedded directly into the steel surface – not applied like conventional gold plating. The layer bonds with the base material at a molecular level. The result: 3–5× harder than galvanic gold plating, more scratch-resistant, longer-lasting. Galvanic gold plating sits as a wafer-thin film on the surface and wears away at contact points – wrist, collar, clasp. PVD is used in the automotive and medical industries. It is not jewellery marketing – it is a proven industrial process.
The cause is a chemical reaction: copper in cheap alloys reacts with sweat to form copper chloride – that is the green substance on the skin. This happens with brass, bronze and many zinc alloys. High-quality 316L stainless steel contains no relevant copper and does not react with the skin's natural environment – so no discolouration, even after hours of wear. Gold-plated jewellery is only safe as long as the coating is intact – with thin galvanic plating, the base material will eventually show through.
Evelence combines 316L steel with PVD coating – both reliably prevent discolouration.
For jewellery worn daily without special care:
  • Sterling silver (925) – tarnishes, scratches easily, needs regular cleaning
  • Gold (585/750) – holds its value, but soft, scratch-prone and expensive to maintain
  • Gold-plated brass – wears at friction points, base material shows through
  • 316L stainless steel – rust-free, sweat-proof, retains shape and colour for years without care
For jewellery worn during sport, showering and sleep, there is no more practical choice.
Five concrete indicators:
  • Material specification – reputable sellers state the exact alloy (316L, 925 silver etc.)
  • Weight & feel – quality steel has a noticeable weight, no plastic feeling
  • Clasps – lobster and spring ring clasps last longer than simple hooks
  • Surface – no bubbles, scratches or uneven coating visible
  • Packaging – a quiet indicator of the brand's standards
Every Evelence piece comes in a premium jewellery box – the kind you would expect from a jeweller. Not as a gimmick, but because the first impression is part of the product.
Barely. This is one of the biggest practical advantages over silver or gold. Stainless steel does not oxidise, does not form a patina and does not need polishing. An occasional wipe with a soft cloth is enough to remove fingerprints or dust. One recommendation: avoid direct contact with perfume, hairspray or aggressive cleaning products – these attack any surface over time, regardless of the material.
Style & Combinations
The basic rule: one to two pieces for a clean look, three for a deliberate statement look. More important than the number is coherence – same metal tone, similar weight, similar visual language. A single bracelet or chain changes an outfit more than you think. If unsure: start with one piece, wear it and see how it feels. Most men who say they don't wear jewellery are never without a minimalist bracelet after a month.
The length determines the entire effect:
  • 50 cm – sits directly at the collarbone, close and clean, looks masculine and minimalist
  • 55 cm – standard length, falls just below, suits almost every outfit and build
  • 60 cm – looser fit, visible over a t-shirt, more of a statement
For beginners, 55 cm is the universally safe choice. Those who like to layer combine 50 cm + 60 cm for depth.
As a rule of thumb: cool skin tones work with silver, warm skin tones with gold. In practice most men follow their clothing style: silver tones suit cool, monochrome outfits – black, grey, white. Gold tones suit warm earth tones – beige, brown, khaki. One often overlooked factor: the watch. Watch and jewellery in the same metal tone make the difference between a considered and a random look. Those who mix both should do so deliberately as contrast – not by accident.
The most important rule: same metal tone. A gold chain and silver bracelet looks random, even if both pieces are good individually. Second rule: similar weight. Combining a thin Micro Cuban chain with a wide cuff looks unbalanced – a thin chain needs a thin bracelet, or you set a deliberate contrast. Third rule: include the watch. If a watch is worn, it counts as a jewellery piece – metal tone and weight should match the rest of the look.
Minimalist men's jewellery has established itself as a permanent part of modern men's fashion since the mid-2010s – not a short-term trend. The reason: it works regardless of context – in the office, at the gym, going out. More eye-catching pieces are subject to stronger fashion cycles. Timeless pieces have no obvious trend features – no logo, no fleeting symbols, clean geometry. A piece that looks timeless today will still look timeless in five years.
This is the design philosophy behind Evelence – no seasonal design, no fast fashion. Every piece is meant to be a permanent part of the look.
With stainless steel: yes. This is where 316L stainless steel sets itself apart from almost all other materials. Sweat, water, chlorine, salt water – quality stainless steel reacts to none of it. That means: no removing before training, no removing in the shower, no removing at the beach on holiday. With silver this does not apply – chlorine and salt significantly accelerate tarnishing. With gold-plated jewellery with thin coating, caution is advised.
Gift & Engraving
The problem with men's gifts: either too impersonal (voucher, perfume) or too risky (clothing in the wrong size). Personalised jewellery solves both – it is personal through the content of the engraving, and practical through the material. A date, GPS coordinates of a special place, a name or a phrase turn a piece into a lasting memento. Unlike a dinner or an experience, it stays – and is worn every day.
Evelence jewellery comes in a premium gift box – ready to give, no extra wrapping needed. Engravings are available on selected pieces: cuffs on the inside, pendants on the back.
Almost anything can be engraved: names, initials, dates, GPS coordinates, short phrases, symbols. What makes an engraving meaningful is not the length – but the specificity. "13.07.2019" feels more personal than "Forever". Coordinates of a place feel more personal than a generic phrase. The best engravings are the ones where the recipient immediately understands what is meant – and no one else does. For longer texts or special characters that don't fit the text field: simply contact us via live chat or email – special requests are possible.
Yes – and that is down to the process itself. Laser engraving removes material, nothing is applied. The engraving is therefore a permanent part of the metal – it does not wear down, does not fade and remains sharp and legible even after years of daily wear. This is the difference from printed or chemically etched lettering, which can wear over time.
With many suppliers, an engraving significantly extends delivery time – often to 1–2 weeks. At Evelence, delivery time remains 1–3 business days even for personalised pieces, as engraving is carried out directly in Germany. Shipping also from Germany, free of charge. This makes personalised jewellery plannable as a last-minute gift – no weeks of lead time required.
